Egidijus Simonis, the head of Pieno Centras uniting Lithuania's three major dairy producers, says rising duties immediately create two major problems. Lithuanian dairy producers will no longer be able to export one of its main products, cheese, and other EU member states won’t be able to export their products, cheese, to be precise, as well.
"Automatically, they will stay in Europe and will either have to be sold elsewhere or cheese production will have to be cut and diversified into other products," Simonis said.
He also paid attention to the fact that rather large volumes of dairy products would stay in the EU as The Netherlands, Denmark, France, Italy and Ireland produce a lot of cheese. And other markets, fore example, China or Japan, are simply not capable to accept such large volumes of dairy products.
