Head of "Oro navigacija": flight situation should start improving in summer

As the number of flights serviced in Lithuania's airspace plunged 82 percent last week, Marius Beliunas, the acting CEO of the country's flight management company, Oro Navigacija (Air Navigation), says the situation in Lithuania is better then in the rest of Europe where the number of flights has gone down 89.3 percent, and hopes the situation will start improving in the summer already.

"This change in Europe matched the pessimistic scenario of the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, EUROCONTROL, of the change in the flows of flights. We will see this drop for some time but we hope the situation will start improving as we are going into the summer. Our company's specialists do not see any positive changes in Europe and the rest of the world yet," Beliunas told BNS.

On April 6-13, compared to the same period last year, the total number of flights serviced in Lithuania's airspace dropped 82 percent to 1,036, and the number of transit flights went down by 81 percent to 817.

Only 344 planes flew through Lithuania's airspace during the past long weekend, down 84.4 percent from the same period last year, and the number of transit flights dropped 82 percent.
