Train speed restrictions introduced due to heat

Lithuania's state-run railway company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithaunian Railways, LG) has introduced train speed restrictions due to the ongoing heatwave and advised passengers to take into account possible delays.

"To ensure traffic safety, the speed of all passenger and freight trains will be restricted from 2 until 7 p.m. as of Wednesday. Such measures come in response to a longer period of hot weather," Novile Valance, spokeswoman for LG, told BNS Lithuania.

Lithuania has set a new June heat record as the country continues sweltering from extremely high temperatures, meteorologists said on Thursday.

35.7 degrees centigrade were recorded in Kaisiadorys, a town in central Lithuania, on Wednesday. It was hottest June day in Lithuania's history.
