Following the reconstruction, the maximum speed on the A1 section from the 10th until the 95 kilometer will be increased to 130 km/h in summer and to 110 km/h in winter.
"Transport flows between Vilnius and Kaunas on the A1 road are the highest not only in Lithuania but also in the Baltic states. Therefore, the improvement of transport conditions and the increase of the maximum speed between the two largest cities in the country will be important for both travels within Lithuania and the improvement of international transport," Lithuanian Transport Minister Jaroslav Narkevic said in a statement.
Vitalijus Andrejevas, head of the Lithuanian Road Administration, said that for the mentioned road to become a highway, road safety measures need to be installed and separate road sections need to be reconstructed.
Two contractors, Kauno Tiltai and Fegda, will do the reconstruction work for around 42.6 million euros.
Figures from the Lithuanian Road Administration show that the average annual transport intensity on this part of the road is around 30,000 cars a day.
