Twenty-three municipalities in Lithuania, out of the total of 60, have declared flu epidemic. A flu epidemic is announced when the number of flu and acute respiratory infection cases exceed 100 per population of 10,000.
Three cases of death from flu-related complications have been confirmed, two more are suspected.
Doctors warn that flu, unlike many other common viruses, can lead to life-threatening complications. Elder people and patients with chronic conditions are particularly susceptible.
