Roje Stona of Jamaica was titled the Olympic champion for throwing discuss 70 metres. Matthew Denny of Australia scored discus bronze with a best throw of 69.31 metres.

Andrius Gudžius, another Lithuanian in the discus throw finals, finished in eight with the 66.55 m result.

Alekna won the third medal for Lithuania at the Paris Olympics, following rower Viktorija Senkutė who claimed bronze in the women’s singles sculls on Saturday and the men’s 3x3 basketball team winning bronze on Monday.

The Alekna family now has two of the three best men’s discus throwers in history, with two-time Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna – the father of 21-year-old Mykolas – now placed third on the world all-time list with his 73.88 metres from 2000, according to World Athletics.
