Belarus suspends imports from Lithuania after border checkpoint closures

Belarus on Thursday announced that it is blocking a range of imports from Lithuania after the latter closed two more checkpoints on the border with Belarus, reports AFP.

Lithuania closed two out of six border checkpoints with Belarus in 2023 and two more this March citing security reasons and the need to tackle smuggling of goods from Belarus.

According to AFP, Belarus said the new import ban targeted various items including food and alcohol, clothing, household appliances, car parts and construction equipment.

Based on the State Data Agency, Lithuania’s exports to Belarus amounted to EUR 1.7 billion in 2023.
