Based on the amendments to the Law on Electronic Communications, drafted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mobile network operators would be obliged to provide data on the number of their users abroad, send them the Foreign Ministry's messages and help to contact Lithuanian or EU citizens, if threats to their security, health or life arise.
The ministry says Lithuania has no latest data on residents being abroad and using services of the country's mobile network operators while providing consular assistance, and cooperation between the ministry and operators is currently not regulated.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues across the world, Lithuania has so far provided information to citizens being or stranded abroad under a separate agreement with mobile network operators.
