The government's vice chancellor Deividas Matulionis says such a council, in cooperation with ethnic minority communities, would coordinate the resolution of economic problems in southeastern Lithuania, as well as other important issues.
"We would like to see what we could do in the area of ethnic minorities: whether we have the legislation issue or other important problems, for example, issues related to the economic development of regions in Eastern Lithuania. The first goal is to agree and see if we have specific tasks we could resolve in some period of time," the vie chancellor told BNS Lithuania.
In his words, the meeting will be attended by Interior Minister Rita Tamasuniene and vice ministers from a large number of ministries. They should decide whether to propose to the government to establish such a council.
According to Matulionis, such a council would be meaningful because once Lithuania is divided into two regions – Vilnius and Central and Western Lithuania, municipalities in the Vilnius region would get less of European support.
