Meanwhile, levels of surface waters is low, and if water levels in the River Neris reach a critical point where there's a threat for the whole ecosystem, Lithuanian might ask Belarus to release a bit more water into the river's lower reaches, the minister said.

"Speaking of fresh water and those resources, we have plenty of them and we see no change in the level of fresh water in deeper layers. But speaking of surface waters and some water extraction points, their capacity is not large and they need time to fill in. We see a risk here, especially in the Kaunas case," Mazeika told the Ziniu Radijas news radio on Thursday.

As people are using more water due to heat, Lithuania's major cities are facing water supply problems, with water pressure down in some areas in Vilnius and Kaunas, and some people in Kaunas don’t have water at all.

Speaking with BNS Lithuania on Wednesday, Ramunas Sulskus, managing director of Kauno Vandenys (Kaunas Waters), confirmed that around 1,000 people have water supply problems. The company plans to supply plastic containers with water to people who have no water at all.

Specialists from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service say water levels in rivers are much lower than usual for June, with the most dangerous situation being observed in the River Neris near Vilnius.
