Joniškis mayor quits to become MP

Mayor of Joniškis Vitalijus Gailius has resigned after being elected to the Seimas, the Central Electoral Commission (VRK) said Wednesday. The Liberal Movement’s politician has formally asked the VRK to cancel his mayor’s mandate.

The election watchdog is set to take a decision in its nearest sitting due on Thursday.

Following Gailius’ resignation, the VRK will need to hold an early mayoral election in Joniškis District Municipality within six months.

Gailius was member of the Seimas from 2012 to 2019, when he gave up his MP seat to become Joniškis mayor after the local election.
