"I will come to the Seimas often as the LFGU group is the largest opposition group and it will definitely do its job, and I am the LFGU leader, so our cooperation with the group will be unavoidable and it will be very close," Karbauskis told journalists after the CEC meeting.

In his words, now the first job would be to form a shadow Cabinet and then get ready for local elections.

"The first job we have and it needs to be done in December is to form a shadow government and draft its program. Next, other party-related tasks include preparation for municipal elections," Karbauskis said.

Asked whether he now plans to pay more attention to business matters, he said he had thought about it yet.

Karbauskis owns Agrokoncernas, one of the largest agricultural business groups in the country.

Karbauskis also strongly criticized the incoming center-right ruling block and said his resignation was "the only way" for the LFGU group to get position in the Seimas.

"Being the largest opposition group, we should have been represented in the Seimas leadership, we should have had the position of chairman of the Committee on Audit and all the other positions we are eligible under the Seimas Statute and tradition," the LFGU leader said.

The LFGU has 32 seats in the parliament.

Karbauskis was leader of the LFGU political group in the previous Seimas and also chaired the parliamentary Committee on Culture.

The Vilmorus public survey showed in September that 29.2 percent of people in Lithuania had a positive opinion about Karbauskis, and 50.4 percent had a negative one.

Karbauskis served as an MP in 1996-2000, 2000-2004 and 2016–2020.
