A draft government decision on the extension of the state of emergency was re-registered on Wednesday to include a proposal to “restrict crossing of the external border of the European Union by citizens of the Russian Federation”.

Only the Russian citizens meeting the requirements set by the Lithuanian government would be allowed entry into Lithuania, according to the draft.

The criteria should be developed and coordinated with other countries of the region by the Foreign Ministry.

Foreign policy chiefs of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia announced earlier on Wednesday that the Baltic countries had broadly reached an agreement on restricting entry into their territory for Russian tourists and said that respective bans would be laid down in national law.

The countries of the region have taken a more stringent approach compared to the EU, which seems more inclined to agree on the suspension of its 2007 visa facilitation deal with Russia.
