"We have the opportunity to take a historic decision and give Ukraine the green light. To make it clear that Ukraine's future is in the EU," the president was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the presidential press service on Tuesday.
"This political message is very important for the people of Ukraine, fighting with their blood for their freedom," he added.
The upcoming European Council session should discuss issues related to the implementation of sanctions for Russia and the need for new ones, military, financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, and the economic situation in the EU.
The virtual meeting was also attended by European Council President Charles Michel.
The virtual meeting was held to prepare for the European Council meeting in Brussels on June 23-24, with granting Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia EU candidate country status to be main topic.
