"We discussed the latest security situation, readiness, force management plans and response scenarios. Our troops and officers are actively working to manage the illegal migration crisis. I have trust in their professionalism and I am grateful to them for their work," the head of state said during the visit.
The president and officers discussed the tactical situation at the Belarusian border, possible event scenarios, readiness plans and inter-institutional cooperation, the presidential office said.
Nauseda stressed the importance of joint and united work by all institutions during the crisis and emergency situation period. The country needs to get ready for all scenarios, therefore, such a center is "a very important instrument in swiftly planning, responding and managing the response to the crisis."
Later in the day, the president will chair a meeting of Lithuania's State Defense Council, to be held to discuss the situation at the EU-Belarusian border.
The SDC, which discusses key state defense issues, includes the president, prime minister, speaker of the Seimas, national defense minister and chief of defense.
Earlier this week, Lithuania declared a state of emergency at its border with Belarus and in asylum seekers' camps, fearing new attempts by migrants to storm into the country from Belarus. The fear was sparked by events at the Polish-Belarusian border earlier this week when several thousand migrants massed near the border.
A total of 6,320 attempts at illegal border crossings have been foiled since early August when the Lithuanian government allowed border guards to turn such migrants back to Belarus. Over 4,200 irregular migrants have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus illegally so far this year.
Lithuania and other Western countries accuse the Minsk regime of orchestrating the unprecedented migration influx, calling it "hybrid aggression".
