Dismantling of Green Bridge statues begins

Since early Sunday, workers were toiling on the Green Bridge in Vilnius. They are taking down the Soviet-era sculptures that have been the object of some debate lately. Experts have said repeatedly that they are in appalling condition and present danger to pedestrians.

Specialists from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University have inspected the statues, built here in the 1950s, concluding that their rusting has accelerated over the last six years and they can fall apart soon. Further delay would also make repair works more difficult.

Some traffic restrictions are associated with the works. Once removed, the statues will be temporarily housed at a lot owned by a municipal company. The estimated worth of the works is EUR 38,000.
