Symbol of Lithuanian-Finnish friendship unveiled in Vilnius
Lithuanian Dalia Grybauskaitė and former Finnish President Tarja Halonen on Thursday unveiled a sculpture entitled Suomis (The Finn) in Vilnius, given as a president to Lithuania by Finland.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by several dozen Vilnius residents. The Finnish gift was symbolically accepted from the Finnish president by the Lithuanian leader and Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius.
The Lithuanian president said during the ceremony that the sculpture was a symbol of close friendship between Lithuania and Finland as it was created by Lithuanian sculptors and funded by Finnish companies.
Subtitrai Grybauskaitės pasisakymui:
We've got a nice occasion today, a new tradition. A country that is our partner, our friend and our neighbour presents a very symbolic gift to Lithuania and to Vilnius. It was designed by Lithuanian architects and sculptors, but it's an investment and a gift from all Finnish companies in Lithuania. Vilnius now has a Finland Square. My wish is for Vilnius to have more such squares. This square is a symbol not just of Finland, but of our Nordic friends.
