Lithuania's Ministry of Environment will submit the requirements via the European Commission with a view to ensuring that no genetically modified (GM) crops are grown in Lithuania. This ban will be in force throughout the territory of the country, the ministry reports.

On Friday, the Baltic Assembly's (BA) Economics, Energy and Innovations Committee and Natural Resources and Environment Committee will convene in Kaunas to discuss the influence of the Russian embargo and the regulation of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the Baltic states.
The Seimas Committee on Rural Affairs has addressed the Government asking to ban cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in Lithuania and thus implement the European Parliament's and the European Council's directive on GMOs.
The State Plant Service under the Ministry of Agriculture, which is responsible for monitoring crops and crop products, carried out 102,096 inspections in 2014 and found 1,184 violations. Nevertheless, genetically modified crops or crop products were not found to be grown or brought to Lithuania.
