Several hundred doctors and their supporters gathered outside the parliament in Vilnius to demand better funding for the health system.

Lithuanian Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga says that there are no obstacles for raising salaries for doctors and other health professionals by 20 percent next May.

Vytautas Kasiulevičius, one of the leaders of the Lithuanian Medical Movement, a newly-established organization of health professionals, is stepping down from the position.

Salaries for Lithuanian doctors and other health professionals could be raised by 15-20 percent next year, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said on Tuesday.

Lithuania's government will discuss three alternatives of raising wages for doctors, Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga said on Thursday after negotiations with representatives of doctors.
