"We are planning to stop every car, but if there are heavy traffic jams, a different tactic may be chosen," Ramunas Matonis, a spokesman for the Police Department, told BNS.
Only goods trucks can travel unrestricted, according to the spokesman.
"We won't stop them because goods can move freely unless there is a suspicion they are carrying a passenger," he added.
The police are setting up 250 checkpoints, equipped with surveillance cameras, on the roads leading to municipal centers.
Matonis warned motorist against trying to cheat or bypass the checkpoints.
"My advice is simple: don't get anywhere unless necessary. If you go, have supporting documents," he said, adding that fines for failing to obey the ban will range between 500 and 1,500 euros.
The roadblocks will be in place from 1 p.m. on Friday and 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Over 900 police crews will be deployed across the country this weekend. More than 300 members of the Riflemen’s Union and around 150 military police will help enforce the ban that was imposed in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19.
