Minister of Education, Science and Sport Gintautas Jakštas last week tendered his resignation, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said Monday.

The Seimas (parliament) has adopted an amendment to the Law on Education that has made kindergarten education compulsory in Lithuania. Fifty-nine parliamentarians voted for the amendment, 9 voted against it, and 27 abstained.

Lithuania's Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA) has launched a competition for students to complete an internship with NASA Ames Research Centre in the United States and is now accepting applications.

On 23 December, the Government approved the proposal put forward by the Ministry of Education and Science to increase the salaries of the lowest earning teachers - nursery school teachers and pre-primary education teachers.
